How Our Boots Are Made
The Craft Behind Our Premium Boots
Our premium boot range is produced in León, Mexico, by a highly experienced manufacturer with more than 30 years of bootmaking expertise. Skilled artisans combine traditional craftsmanship with established manufacturing techniques to produce quality boots designed for durability, comfort and long-term wear.
The process involves more than 100 individual steps, from carefully selecting and cutting the leather through to hand lasting, Goodyear welt construction, sole attachment and final finishing. The images below follow the making of our Kununurra boot as an example of this process, with the same traditional construction methods applied across our premium Mexican-made boot range. Combined with premium materials and proper care, this considered approach to construction creates boots made to perform and develop character through years of wear.
From Hide to Upper
1. Leather Selection & Inspection
The process begins with the selection of suitable boot leather. Each hide is assessed for quality, grain, character and consistency to ensure it is appropriate for the construction and intended performance of the boot.
2. Leather Thickness
The leather is measured for consistent thickness across the hide. Maintaining the appropriate thickness provides the upper with the strength and structure required while retaining the flexibility needed for a comfortable fit.
3. Single Piece Leather Upper
The leather is carefully cut into a single piece for the boot upper. Precision at this stage is critical to achieving accurate proportions, consistent fit and efficient use of the natural characteristics of each hide.
4. Upper Pattern Positioning
The pattern is positioned over the prepared leather to accurately define the boot's side profile and individual upper components. Careful positioning helps ensure consistency across each pair while making the best use of the leather.
Quality Materials, Chosen for the Job
The right leather plays an important role in how a boot looks, feels and performs. Our boots are made using quality materials including premium full-grain cow leather, genuine bull shoulder leather, Crazy Horse full-grain leather, suede and nubuck. Full-grain leather retains the natural grain of the hide, providing a strong, durable surface that develops character and a distinctive patina with wear. Crazy Horse leather is treated to create its characteristic rich, worn-in appearance, while suede and nubuck offer a softer feel and distinctive textured finish.
Each material provides its own combination of durability, comfort, texture and appearance, carefully selected to suit the design and intended use of the boot. Combined with traditional techniques such as hand lasting and Goodyear welt construction, quality leather forms an important part of what makes our boots durable, repairable and built for long-term wear.
Shaping the Boot
5. Pull Tab Preparation
The pull tabs are positioned and secured to the upper in preparation for stitching. These functional components provide leverage when putting the boots on and are integrated into the construction of the upper.
6. Upper Assembly & Stitching
The individual components of the upper are assembled and stitched together, including the elastic side panels and pull tabs. The stitching must be precise and consistent to provide secure seams while allowing the elastic panels to perform correctly.
7. Hand Lasting
The completed upper is drawn over a shaped last that replicates the form of the foot. The leather is carefully tensioned and shaped by hand around the last, establishing the boot's final shape, fit and overall profile before the upper is secured.
8. Goodyear Welt Construction
The boot is constructed using the traditional Goodyear welt method. A welt is secured around the perimeter of the boot, creating a durable structural connection between the upper, insole and outsole. This construction method provides stability and allows the outsole to be replaced when required.
Goodyear Welt Construction
Goodyear welt construction is a traditional boot making method designed for strength, durability and long-term wear. A strip of material called a welt runs around the edge of the boot, with the first row of stitching securing the upper and insole to the welt, and a second row of external stitching attaching the outsole to it. Unlike construction methods where the sole is bonded directly to the boot, the welt creates a separate, durable connection between the upper and sole. This construction helps provide increased stability and resistance to light water exposure, while protecting the integrity of the boot through everyday wear.
The real advantage of Goodyear welt construction is that your boots are built to be repaired and resoled. As the outsole wears down, it can be removed and replaced without replacing the entire boot, extending the useful life of the quality upper and other core components. This sets Goodyear welted boots apart from many cemented or bonded construction methods, where the sole is attached directly to the upper and replacement can be far more difficult. The result is a boot built using a time-tested construction technique that prioritises durability, repairability and longevity; giving you boots designed to be worn hard, maintained and kept going for years to come.
Bringing It All Together
9. Outsole & Heel Construction
The outsole is carefully positioned and secured to the Goodyear welt before being stitched into place, creating a strong, durable connection. The heel is then fitted and secured to provide the correct balance, support and finished profile of the boot.
12. Sole & Heel Shaping
The sole and heel are carefully shaped using specialist finishing machinery. Excess material is removed and the edges are refined to create a precise, consistent profile that follows the shape of the boot.
13. Edge Finishing
The welt and sole edges undergo a final finishing process to create a clean, defined edge and consistent appearance. Specialist tooling is used to refine the edge profile and achieve the desired finish.
14. Final Inspection & Polishing
Each finished pair undergoes a final quality inspection. The leather, stitching, welt, sole, heel, shape and overall finish are checked before the boots are cleaned and polished. Only once the final details meet the required standard are the boots ready for wear.
